20 Questions

Megan Dixon

  1. How would you describe yourself in 3 words? Resourceful, compassionate, and joyful
  2. What draws you to nonprofit work? I’ve worked in the nonprofit sector since graduating college, and I find myself drawn to organizations that do the important, “human” work that makes our world livable. Be it social services, environmental, health care, etc. They are essential, and I am honored to work with them.
  3. What was the last piece of art (book, music, movie, etc) that moved you, and why? I just finished The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill, and it was spectacular. The writing is beautiful and captivating and completely draws you into her dystopian, fantasy world. I couldn’t put it down.
  4. What was your first job, and what lesson did you take from it that you still use today? When I was 16, I started working with a family friend at her small bridal boutique. It was located in a beautiful, Victorian home and my day was filled with helping women try on giant white gowns and accessories… plus, I got paid in prom dresses. It was Heaven! The best lesson I took from that job was that work can (and should) be enjoyable! When you love what you do, it’s never really work. Also, joy spreads. It is contagious. That’s an important lesson to live by.
  5. To be successful, what’s the most important skill a professional should develop? Work hard and be humble. You never know everything, and there are few things in life that can’t be improved upon with the synergy of a great team. Whether you are starting at the very bottom, the middle, or the top, work your hardest and go to bed each night knowing you gave it your all!
  6. Who makes you laugh the hardest? Besides Patti Westby? My husband, Andy Dixon.
  7. What was the worst purchase you’ve ever made? Two wedding gowns. I mean, really? At least it was two gowns and only one husband…
  8. Dogs or cats? I prefer cats. They are no-nonsense, practical creatures, and I appreciate that.
  9. Beatles or Elvis? Beatles, all the way.
  10. Who do you call first with good news? Andy 😊and then my mama.
  11. Who has most impacted your professional life? Patti and Mike Westby, hands down. They gave me space to spread my wings and the mentoring to expand in all ways possible. It’s been a great 3 years!
  12. What was your first record, CD, or cassette you bought? I can’t remember the first one I bought, but I do remember the first one I received. I had just turned 11, and my older brother gave me a Bad Company CD. My mother was SO against it. Of course, he quickly went out and bought me a Beatles Anthology and she about came unglued.
  13. Who do you wish you could meet again for the first time? My husband. I can remember the very first time I saw him, and it’s one of my best memories.
  14. Favorite Holiday? Fourth of July! It’s hot, you get to wear flip-flops and eat hot dogs, and it ends in fireworks all celebrating our amazing country. Hard to beat!
  15. What travel experience has most influenced your life? I spent 11 months studying in Seville, Spain when I was 20/21 and used much of that year to travel to adjoining countries. That whole experience shaped a lot of who I am today.
  16. What inspires you to do your best work? Seeing my clients reach their goals is the most incredible feeling and it inspires me to keep going and keep working hard for them.
  17. How do you restore your energy when you’re feeling worn down or burnt out? I garden. Getting my hands in the dirt and turning a tiny seed into a healthy fruit or vegetable for my family is the best feeling in the world. I’m kind of a garden junkie.
  18. Is there a humanitarian that has left an impression on you? When I was little, I was mildly obsessed with Princess Diana. I wanted to be just like her – in all ways – but especially in how she dealt with children and those in need. So much of what we hear in the media today is harsh and cruel, but she was gentle and loving, and that’s a person to emulate.
  19. If a movie was made of your life, what actor or actress would you want to play you? Reese Witherspoon, but mostly because I asked my husband for his opinion and he’s smart enough to pick a beautiful actress.
  20. Favorite movie quote? “You’re killin’ me, Smalls!” – The Sandlot
